Donald P. VanStry

Donald's commitment to helping veterans stems from prior active duty service in the Navy, the Navy Reserve, and serving as a public affairs specialist in the Air Force Reserve. He is a proud combat veteran of the Persian Gulf War. Two of Donald's five children are also veterans, one being awarded a Purple Heart in Iraq.

Donald is a partner practicing in the firm’s family law and wills, estates and probate groups. With nearly 20 years of experience helping Central New York families and children in both private practice and nonprofit scenarios, Donald is a trusted ally of spouses, parents, grandparents and other parties. His practice at KSLN includes dedication to the legal areas of divorce, separation agreements, custody, adoptions, child support, spousal maintenance, violation/enforcements actions, estate planning and probate actions. Donald prides himself on his commitment to his clients with a focus on both immediate and future needs.

Prior to joining KSLN, Donald was Senior Counsel at Tully Rinckey PLLC, and for nearly a decade prior, ran a successful solo practice in Syracuse. Donald is currently a member of the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Fourth Department’s Attorney for the Child Program, the Onondaga County Family Court Improvement Program and the Alternative to Juvenile Incarceration Committee, the Veteran’s Diversion Project, and several other committees in the county to assist with juveniles and the mentally ill within the criminal justice system.

Donald was the former program supervisor for the Office of Mental Health family-based treatment program that operated in Onondaga and Cayuga counties. There, he trained families for New York State Office of Mental Health child-client behavioral interventions and coordinated treatment programming by engaging biological family members and other interested parties. While attending Loyola Chicago University’s School of Law, Donald served as a national fellow for the CIVITAS CHILD LAW CENTER, an award-winning program that provides training for effective and ethical child advocacy.

Donald also supports Central New York veterans by volunteering and participating at various forums where veterans learn about services the CNY community offers them and where they can get free legal advice.
